Do you sometimes feel like you’re stuck?

Ever feel lost in your life and not sure where to go?

When I was in high school, I certainly felt this way, as if my life was going nowhere. So, perhaps some of you reading this feel the same way that I did so many years ago.

One of the hardest things about being young is the fact that we still haven’t discovered who we are. When I was a young student, I had no clue about my own personality, character, strengths, and weaknesses.

I had no idea what my dreams and goals were.

I didn’t even know what I liked and disliked.

So, for a boy who was completely lost in the world, it was very difficult to live in a society that forced me to “hurry up and choose a major in university”, then “quickly choose a career-path”, then “swiftly choose a life-partner”, and finally “confidently choose a life-path”, etc. etc., as if this process was as easy as following an instruction-manual for a new television.

How can a young person decide on a “life-path” when they haven’t even decided “who they are”?

And, I remember spending much of my youth wandering through the hazy mist of uncertainty, not sure of my purpose in life and very scared of the future.

Why am I here?
Why was I born?
What is my goal in this world?
What was I meant to do in this life?

Who the heck am I??

These are the thoughts which constantly whirled around inside my head, slowly driving me crazy through many sleepless nights, when I stayed up till dawn pondering such existential and metaphysical questions.

I had almost given up on finding the answers to my questions in life when, one day, I came upon a book which was to change my life forever: The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho.

At first, I didn’t have any great expectations of this little book, but after a few minutes, I was hooked, and I ended up finishing the book in one sitting, hands trembling as I turned the pages. For you see, the main character of this story was so much like me, and I could tell that he was searching for the same things as I was.

This was the tale of a young man who gives up the comforts and security of a “conventional” life, and instead, he takes a huge risk in order to seek the answers to his questions out there in the vast and mysterious world.

This is a book about thinking that you know who you are, then realizing that you were completely wrong, and finally discovering who you really are.

It’s a story about first losing yourself in order to find yourself.

This book inspired me to keep on living, and I hope it offers you the same comfort in a world that, at times, seems very cold and uncaring.

The author, Paulo Coelho, was born in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

When he was 17 years old, his parents committed him to a mental institution, where he attempted escape three times, until he was eventually released at the age of 20.

He is a university-drop-out, ex-hippie, and an avid traveller. He loves music, words, and wine.

One day, he saw a white bird-feather in the window of a shop on the street, and he interpreted this to be a sign from God, telling him to become a professional writer.

One year later, he finished writing The Alchemist.

At first, the only people willing to publish the book was a small Brazilian publishing company that only printed 900 copies and decided never to print any more. However, Paulo Coelho didn’t give up, and he eventually switched to a larger publishing company which saw the hidden value and potential in the writer’s simple story, and The Alchemist became a huge international success.

Why has this little book received so much love from readers all over the world?

行き詰まっているように感じることがありますか？

人生で迷ったり、どこへ向かえばいいのか分からなくなったことはありませんか？

高校生の頃、まさにそんな風に感じていました。人生が行き詰まっているように感じていました。もしかしたら、これを読んでいる皆さんの中にも、何年も前の私と同じように感じている人がいるかもしれません。

若い頃の一番辛いことの一つは、「自分が何者なのか」をまだ見つけられていないということです。私が学生だった頃は、自分の性格、個性、長所、短所が全く分かりませんでした。

自分の夢や目標が何なのか、全く分かりませんでした。

自分の好きなこと、嫌いなことさえも、さっぱり分かりませんでした。

ですから、世の中で完全に迷子になっていた少年にとって、「大学で急いで専攻を決めろ」「急いで進路を決めろ」「急いで人生のパートナーを決めろ」「後悔せず１００％確信を持って自分の人生の道を決めろ」などと、まるで新しいテレビの取扱説明書に沿って容易に操作を行うのと同じくらい簡単なプロセスであるかのように、これらの義務を押し付けられる社会の中で生きるのは、非常に困難なことでした。

「自分が何者か」さえ決めていない若者が、どうやって「人生の道」を決めることができるのでしょうか？

そして、私は青春時代の多くを、人生の目的も分からず、未来に強い不安を感じながら、不確実性の霞んだ霧の中をさまよっていたことを覚えています。

私はなぜここにいるのか？
なぜ私は生まれたのか？
この世界での私の目標・役割は何なのか？
この人生で私は何をすべきだったのか？

「自分」って、一体何者なのか？？

こうした考えが頭の中で絶えず渦巻き、幾夜も眠れぬ夜を過ごし、夜明けまで存在論的、形而上学的な問いに考え込んでいた私は、ゆっくりと狂気に駆り立てられていました。

人生の問いへの答えを見つけることを諦めかけていたある日、私の人生を永遠に変えることになる一冊の本に出会いました。それはパウロ・コエーリョ作家の『アルケミスト』です。

最初は、この小さな本に大きな期待はしていませんでしたが、読み始めて数分後には夢中になり、震える手でページをめくりながら、一気に読み終えてしまいました。というのも、この物語の主人公は私と非常によく似ていて、私と同じものを探し求めていたことがはっきりと分かったからです。

これは、快適で安全な「ありきたりな」生活を捨て、広大で神秘的な世界に潜む自らの問いへの答えを求めて、大きなリスクを冒す若者の物語でした。

この本は、「自分が何者であるか」を知っていると思い込んでいた人が、それが全くの勘違いだったことに気づき、そしてついに「本当の自分」を発見する物語です。

これは、自分自身を見つけるために、まず自分を見失う物語です。

この本は私に生き続ける勇気を与えてくれました。そして、時に冷たく無情に感じるこの世界で、あなたにも同じ慰めを与えてくれることを願っています。

著者のパウロ・コエーリョは、ブラジルのリオデジャネイロで生まれました。

17歳の時、両親は彼を精神病院に入院させました。彼はそこから3度脱走を試みましたが、20歳でようやく釈放されました。

彼は大学を中退し、元ヒッピーで、熱心な旅行家です。音楽、言葉、そしてワインを愛しています。
