Right now, you are all talented and hard-working students at Saeki English School. But, eventually, you will have the opportunity to play a leadership role as you get older. Whether we are teachers, coaches, managers, parents, or counsellors, everyone has to be a leader for someone at some point in their lives. So, it’s important to start preparing for our eventual leadership roles, while we are still students.

What is a leader? Most people would agree that a leader is someone who raises and nurtures their students in order to help them grow. And, of course, growth can come in many forms: physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual. In that case, in order to become good leaders, we need to ask ourselves one important question: what does it mean to ‘raise’ someone?

What do students need in order to grow healthy and strong? What do leaders need in order to best assist their students in their lifelong journey of personal growth? How can great students eventually become great leaders? What personal qualities do we need to nurture in order to become mature, responsible, and compassionate leaders?

I discovered a wonderful program hosted by NHK, where they discuss the questions posed above. In this episode, we will hear from a former Olympic track-and-field athlete, and he will discuss his own views and philosophy about raising and nurturing someone. I found his views to be profound and inspiring, so I am excited to share his story with you.

今、皆さんは佐伯英語教室の生徒です。しかし、いずれは年齢を重ねるにつれて、リーダーシップを発揮する機会が訪れます。教師、コーチ、マネージャー、親、カウンセラーなど、誰もが人生のどこかの時点で誰かのリーダーにならなければなりません。ですから、学生のうちから、将来のリーダーシップの役割に向けて準備を始めることが重要です。

リーダーとは何か？ リーダーとは、生徒を育て、成長を促す人であることに、多くの人が同意するでしょう。そしてもちろん、成長には、身体的、精神的、感情的、そしてスピリチュアルなものなど、様々な形があります。では、優れたリーダーになるためには、自分自身に一つの重要な問いを問いかける必要があります：人を『育てる』とはどういうことなのか？

生徒が健やかに強く成長するためには何が必要でしょうか？ 生徒の生涯にわたる個人的な成長の旅を最大限に支援するために、リーダーは何をするべきでしょうか？ 優秀な生徒はどのようにして優れたリーダーになれるのでしょうか？成熟し、責任感と思いやりを持ったリーダーとなるためには、どのような資質を育む必要があるのでしょうか？

NHK制作の素晴らしい番組を見つけました。そこでは、上記の問いについて詳しく議論する様々な方たちのお話が聴けます。今回のエピソードでは、元オリンピック陸上競技選手が、「人を育む」と言う題に関する自身の考えや哲学について語ってくれます。彼の考えは深く、刺激的なものでしたので、ぜひ皆さんにも彼のストーリーをお伝えしたいと思います。
